Family Psychotherapy
Family Psychotherapy
In family therapy, problems may be caused by more than just one member of the family. This type of treatment helps identify how each family member relates and interacts with each other, and how individual problems are caused and sustained by the family dynamic.
- Family therapy is utilized to achieve a wide variety of therapeutic goals. For example, family therapy could be used when a child does not get along with his or her siblings and is consistently demonstrating challenging behavior towards the parents.
- The objective of the therapy would be to find out which family members are contributing to the unhealthy choices demonstrated by the child, instead of trying to solely address the child as the only one responsible for the conflict.
- In this mode of therapy, the family is treated as one unit and work is done to achieve family goals instead of individual ones.
The treatment takes place with all members of the family present at the same time or through different intervals one on one depending on the needs of the family and style of the therapist.
Family therapy is offered in a wide range of institutions which include: schools, counseling institutes, private psychotherapy practices, hospitals, agencies, community agencies, among others. They should always be led by a mental health professional.
