Group Therapy
Group Therapy
Group therapy is a therapeutic experiences shared by individuals working on similar problems and issues. The therapy offers an effective vehicle to help achieve a large variety of goals.
Psycho-educational Groups
These groups basically offered to provide participants with information about specific topics with the objective of providing new resources, tools and an opportunity for further understanding. This type of group has a structured methodology where the participants may receive materials to help prepare prior to the meeting (topics, modules, questions, etc). However this format, although structured, also allows for reflection during the group work.
A Psycho-educational group is an authentic and organic process between the facilitator and the participants in which no one knows more than the other person. No one is more important that anyone else. This methodology does not only limit itself to the presentation of materials and information. It is more focused on the analysis of the topic being discussed and how the beliefs and ideas of the participants effect their overall opinion of the topic. Their personal experience and outlook can create new concepts, new ways of looking at the topic, of dealing with it, and can even create more questions that need to be discussed and worked through.
After participating in this type of workshop, some individuals may arrive at the conclusion that it would benefit them to pursue individual therapy to work on a specific area that is more personal.
Therapeutic Groups
In these groups, participants have the opportunity to work through personal problems along with other participants who live and experience similar issues. It is an opportunity to heal.
In comparison to Psycho-educational groups, where participants acquire new tools for understanding and then reflect on that new information, therapeutic groups are a tool to achieve positive change in one’s life.
This therapy looks to cure by analyzing private themes and topics in the participants’ lives with the end goal of building alternate scenarios and solutions that address their issues and problems. This requires strong focus, dedication and an intense schedule that Psycho-educational groups do not provide.
