Latin roots are an important aspect of our lives. Honoring them every second keeps us aware of our origins and our destiny. This honor and respect are values that our grandparents taught and modeled to our parents. Consequently, they influence from generation to generation. Therefore, having a relationship with our grandparents is of vital importance, since they contribute to the development of our personal and professional lives.
I would like to express my personal experience with my grandmothers, especially my paternal grandmother. For me, she was an exceptional woman. She was the leader of the whole family and therefore my heroine. She died at the age of 80 leaving a legacy full of beautiful memories in our lives. Therefore, today I invite you to take a second of your lives to reevaluate your relationship with your grandparents, whether maternal or paternal.
New York is a multicultural city, we adapt to it quickly and quickly learn to accept differences in people. This is due to the same need to tolerate and coexist with other people, no matter who they are or what their cultural roots are, feeling the flexibility of being. That way, we identify more as Latinos. Therefore, we must have a higher degree of tolerance, beyond our personal needs, and consequently, respect for our elders and grandparents should not be less important.
In my opinion, we must honor them at every moment of our lives. My grandmother left many teachings, including:
- Respect for our elders
- The protection of children because they are the future of our generations.
- Humility is a unique value in each human being.
- Not forgetting our origins and our Latin roots, only then can we continue our family legacy.
- Appreciate people for who they are, and not for what they can offer us.
- Education that is the door to personal and professional progress.
Unfortunately, we live in a materialistic world, humanly we give more value to people for what can be obtained from them. My grandmother was a beautiful woman inside and out. But her generosity with the people around her made her charming. That’s why I always admired her, and her teachings will always be in my heart.
I want to stimulate our consciousness from today so that we love and respect our grandparents because they are one of the most fundamental aspects of our lives. As a therapist, I always encourage my patients that our roots continue to influence our future generations, leaving a lasting legacy in our lives and a sense of family satisfaction.
