It is important to take into account that many of our memories concerning things that have happened in past years can bring us nostalgia and frustration which can eventually have a detrimental effect on our mental state. So, when we evaluate the things that have happened to us we should try and focus ourselves upon our positive achievements, and not allow ourselves to become morose and so ruin our Christmas parties. We should anticipate the New Year with a happy heart and a determination to make resolutions which incorporate small changes towards realistic goals. These goals will help us to live a more peaceful existence especially with all those people around us in our daily lives.
As it is unfortunately true that there is no way to recuperate the time that has passed we should use this moment to think about how we have lived our lives throughout the past year and analyze if we have used our time productively or not.
I would like to give you some ideas of how to deal with nostalgia in a positive way and how to use this for your personal development.
Firstly I would like to invite you to take a moment to revise and reflect upon your personal goals. What is my objective as a mother? As a daughter? etc. Have I made use of my time in a positive and productive way? Have I achieved the goals that I had for this year? If we do not feel that we have achieved our goals we should ask ourselves questions such as. What were the obstacles which prevented me from reaching my goals and what did I learn from them?
Secondly, I suggest you take a piece of paper and write down your thoughts. At the end write down your new goals. Be sure to include any goals left over from the past year. It is very important to focus on the goals that you did achieve, this will give you a sense of satisfaction at the beginning of the new year because you will clearly see the progress you have. done, and with the new year, you have a new opportunity to meet the goals that remain unfulfilled. When you are writing your goals, keep the following points in mind:
- We need to be realistic regarding our qualities and abilities
- Of the timeframe we have available to achieve our goals
- Of the budget we have available
Do not be afraid to ask for help from friends, family, community centers, psychologists or therapists, in order to achieve your goals.
Our recommendations, and help from other people can give you the determination and the motivation to achieve your new projects and so avoid ending the year with feelings of anxiety, frustration and sadness.
Dear readers, I invite you to list your personal goals right now, so that you will not let this opportunity to continue growing in this new year, slip away from you.
